If It Bleeds It Leads

So upon my return from across the pond it seemed like there hadn't been any major events that had taken place and I had been ignorant of -- ie. SWINE FLU when I was in Costa Rica, etc. But my assumption was incorrect, at least locally. Seems like the Los Angeles area has had a dark period this past week.

I had only watched an episode about the girl wanting to get with millionaires or whatever at a friend's place. This same friend broke the news about one of the millionaires killing his ex-wife in Buena Park and the show subsequently getting shut down when it was revealed that he was a fugitive. What was an especially gristly fact in this story was that, despite his taking out her teeth and removing her fingertips, the cops were able to identify the woman's body -- by the serial numbers on her breast implants. Last night the guy's body was found in a Canada hotel room, apparently dead by suicide.

So Los Angeles has seemed to have a strangely violent reactionary weekend with 5 people killed (4 within a 12 hours of each other). All unrelated, all apparently for little or no reason. Although we're a big city with a lot of crime, these numbers are not small potatoes.

I don't know what the hell's going on, but I hope everyone can just chill out for a minute and stop maiming each other -- stranger or acquaintance.

  1. Reminds me of the essay "The White Album" by Joan Didion. One of my absolute favorites.

  2. I meant your post. I guess that was kind of a creepy/cold way to respond to the actual substance of your post, which is tragic and bizarre.

  3. Although I haven't read "The White Album" or know what it's about, I'm gonna take this as a compliment.

[Also, don't worry, I know what you meant]

  4. I should mention Joan Didion had an eating disorder.
