So when my friends were in town we made a trek to Hollywood Park Racetrack. I don't understand why I had never gone there before. Thursdays are free entry, free parking, and $1 Bud Lights until 3PM. Also there's seating in the shade. All we did was drink beer and yell about who had claims to which horse based on their names (no actual betting took place). I believe the best winner was Global Inspiration, winning by a nose.
Mostly I was surprised at the low level of seediness of the place. Sure, we saw a couple drug deals, old fellas playing the horses like it was bingo, and a lady repeatedly pushing and letting go of her full baby stroller downhill (toward a fence) so the kids would squeal, but other than that it was pretty tame.
There were a bunch of families there, actually. My favorite moment of the day took place because of this fact, as I heard a 6 year old child yelling after a race had ended:
"Mom how did my horse make out? MOM!! MOM!! HOW DID MY HORSE MAKE OUT??"
