There are moments when you being to realize that your city has had an effect on you. When I first came to LA I always harped on the ever-pulsing undercurrent of consumption. Everyone has to have this or that. $75 Louis Vuitton flip flops? Of course! $130 skein of yarn to knit a superchic scarf? No second thoughts!
These aren't jokes, they are real life decisions witnessed by culture-shocked 18-year-old me.
That said, I recently bought a 3G iPhone. Now, my boyfriend has a hustler/deal-finder streak in him, so I got it for the wowzers price of $75 and I managed to finagle a 15% discount on my phone bill with my old school ID. But the glee of getting that stupid little machine in the mail--the desire for a sweet smart phone finally satisfied--it's...a little scary to see what LA has done to me within these five short years.
