I read today that Pope Benedict went to Africa for the first time and announced to listeners (and repeated later when journalists couldn't believe their little ears) that condoms were not only wrong and un-Catholic--no surprises there--but also that HIV/AIDS is apparently "a tragedy that cannot be overcome by money alone, that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which can even increase the problem" [my goddamn italics, thank you very much].
This horrific piece of news became a if-you-don't-laugh-you'll-cry situation when this Onion article popped up on my Onion RSS feed: "Starving Third World Masses Warned Against Evils of Contraception."
My initial reaction was "Wow, Onion, that was fast"...until I noticed the article was dated October 9, 2002. I love this because the Onion people didn't have the balls (or believe it possible) to say even in their fake Onion world that the Pope would proclaim such a thing, but they did have the balls to put it back on their front page in light of current events.
Well done, Onion. It wouldn't be the first time.
